The fastest way to swim on your back is using a stroke called Backstroke.

Backstroke is different to most strokes because you cannot see where you are going.  Try and swim with all of your body close to the surface of the water and keep your hips and legs behind your shoulders.  The way to do this is to make sure that your head is resting in the water, almost like lying on your back in bed and putting your head on a pillow.
